Welcome to another Write a Review Wednesday, a meme started by Tara Lazar as a way to show support to authors of kids literature. My kids returned to school this week so last week we reviewed one of our favourite back to school books, I talked about I am too absolutely small for School, by Lauren Child. This week, with packing lunches and making snacks and thinking about dinners, my head is swimming in food so I’ve picked a food book.
There are a number of benefits to living in a big city, one of which is the great selection of ethnic foods. Our three kids have had the privilege of enjoying Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Polish, well you get the idea. So I was very excited when I discovered Amy Wilson Sanger’s board book Hola Jalapeno (published by Tricycle Press), a World Snack Book.
This compact board book uses a mix of illustration and photographic imagery showing various types of Mexican food. The fun rhyme throughout expresses a love for the food all while sharing a tasty vocabulary of Mexican food names. The back cover even helps new readers and those new to the language by offering the pronunciations of the different foods included in the book.
This book is great for those who want to share with their kids a bit of their food heritage or expose kids to new foods. We have a few books in the World Snack Series and my kids love them all. Now when we go out to eat, even my two year old will ask for a tamales or a tostada and she knows what they are.
You can also see past Write a Review Wednesday posts too, for other books we’ve enjoyed in our house.
